The breed dates back to 1959 when a natural mutation occurred among non-pedigree cats in Devon. The first cat recognised as a Devon Rex (Kirlee) was the only curly-coated kitten in a litter thought to be fathered by a large black stray with ringlets.
Today's Devon Rex have a more exaggerated head type with larger and lower set ears.
The Devon Rex is a short haired breed of medium foreign build with a unique head type which is quite unlike any other breed. The short wide wedge head with large low set very wide based ears and large oval eyes set on a slant with a 'wicked expression' give the breed its 'pixie' face. The short, dense coat, which is soft in texture, has a distinctive wave or ripple, especially over the back and sides.
Ask any Devon Rex breeder or owner and they will tell you that generally these cats are very entertaining and funny! They are both active and interactive, seeking you out to play and for a cuddle. Even when these naughty little wavy-coated, long-necked, large-eyed cats are pouncing on shoulders from great heights, climbing curtains, ambushing showers and hogging the bed, Devon Rex enthusiasts will tell you it's all part of their charm. They are often described as a cross between monkeys and cats although I would also say dog due to their fetching abilities and their need to follow you around the house.
Devon Rex cats are the perfect companions for anyone looking for a lively and attention seeking pet. Many people with allergies find they can live with a Devon Rex but it's important to spend time with the breed just to make sure.
Please note that all of our Devon kittens are sold as indoor only pets on the non-active register.
